MATCH REPORT RICHARDSON CUP FINAL Dalton United 1st 2 - 0 Turton
Thursday 23 Apr 7pm KO
THE champagne corks were popping for Dalton United AFC last night as they won West Lancashire League Premier Division Richardson Cup.
The Railway Meadow outfit beat Bolton-based Turton 2-0 in the final at the Lancashire FA headquarters in Leyland. Dalton dominated the early stages and took the lead on 15 minutes when Danny Leech scored at the near post after a superb run and cross from lone striker Stuart Shaw. United had two strong penalty shouts turned down before the referee brought the first half proceedings to a close.
Turton pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but the Dalton defence stood firm. United doubled their advantage with 15 minutes to go when Turton failed to clear a cross from Gary Prosser and Andy Johnson smashed the ball into the back of the net.
Dalton, managed by Jon Balm and Tony Callister, comfortably saw out the remaining time to lift the Richardson Cup for the first time since 1982/83.
Prior to last night the last local team to win the competition were Vickers SC – a team managed by Balm and John Goodwin – who beat Turton in the 1992/93 final. “I’m really pleased for everyone connected with the club. There’s been a lot of hard work going on here and it’s really nice to get our hands on some silverware.”
